Background
A native Australian, Tim Flannery is a leading scientist and conservationist. He appeared at The Progressive Forum to discuss his book, The Weather Makers (2001), an international best seller. The Weather Makers presents the powerful connection between climate change and human activity, and lays out a game plan for halting and eventually reversing the damage that we “weather makers” are doing. In recognition of his conservation work, he was named Australian of the Year in 2007. He is a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, ABC radio, NPR, and the BBC. He spent a year at Harvard as professor of Australian studies in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. He was director of the South Australian Museum and the National Geographic Society’s Australasian representative. He served as Chief Commissioner of the Australian Climate Commission. In 2013, Flannery joined other former ministers to form the Climate Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing facts about climate change to the public. His other recent books include Now or Never: Why We Must Act Now to End Climate Change and Create a Sustainable Future (2009) and Here on Earth: A Natural History of the Planet (2011). He lives with his wife Alexandra in New South Wales. This past speaker page shares her podium presentation as well as the Q&A.
